I've waited 6 years, I can wait 4 more months. I'm skipping Vol. 1 untill Vol. 2 comes out. Then I'll go see them in the same day.

grunter10-09-03 01:01 PM

Saw it last night with a hyped, full-capacity crowd.

The naysayers and "split-bitchers" are idiots. Just flat-out idiots.

This movie positively SLAYS!! A geek potpouri of all the things a movie fan (especially one of the '70s) would think was cool.

I'd go into it more, but I get very tired of "puss*footing" around the spoiler queens who can't discipline themselves enough to STOP READING THE DAMNED SPOILERS. You know who you are.

Just go. Laugh like a maniac.

And then go again.

"KILL BILL" is the antidote for one of the most lackluster summers in the history of film.

I absolutely hate you for having seen it already.

re: Daryl Hannah...yeah, not till Vol 2... but there is ONE scene where someone loses "sight" of their enemy...tee hee hee.

anyhow, So last night I got to see a free screening of the 4th film by Quentin Tarantino, KILL BILL VOL. 1. This movie kicks ass from start to finish. It is ultra violent, hyper kinetic and visually stunning (all these standard 'film reviewisms' get new life from QT, as it really IS all of those things).

The story is not important really...Uma Thurman is out for revenge...and boy does she get some. The movie is told in classic Tarantino Non-Linear form, fused with 70's Kung Fu conventions, black and white photography and animation, it's truly a unique experience. And anyone who has heard Tarantino's claims that the film is "an orgy of violence"...well, he wasn't lying... it truly IS. The House of Blue Leaves scene is JAW DROPPING. I don't think I'm likely to see a better action sequence in ANY film for the next year (save for maybe KB vol.2 in February)

I am giddy from seeing this movie...it was just so ****ING COOL. Truly. GO SEE IT or you will be missing out on one of the coolest movies of the year.

***** / *****

"I Have Vermin to KILL"

PS. I think the split was fine... Vol. 1 is very satisfying and I can't wait for vol.2

Mordred10-10-03 10:54 AM

I saw it last night too... totally blew me away. The fight with GoGo is probably the coolest fight scene I've ever seen. I certainly think the decision to go B&W in the one fight scene was a good choice, particularly for the visceral impact it made after it was all over.

One question I had. I read on AICN this morning that there was an epilogue that "completely changed" the film or something like that. I stayed through a majority of the credits (but not all of them) and didn't see any epilogue. I've heard reports that there is no epilogue and Harry Knowles was smoking something... or he saw a different print. Anybody actually stay through the end of the credits and can confirm there was nothing I missed?

Mordred

Rypro 52510-10-03 10:56 AM

someone said earlier that it was about 20 seconds into the credits.

Mordred10-10-03 10:59 AM

Well there is a line of exposition (the last line in the film) which is probably what Knowles was refering to because it does change things considerably, but unless I'm dreaming (which is possible, the movie let out at 2:40AM) it came before any credits.

Black and white and animation. Reading this thread is putting me more and more off the movie. Just hope the black and white/animation scenes don't go on for to long.

flashburn10-10-03 02:58 PM

What was the deal with the 'beeping' sound going over the brides name during the beginning of the film? It also happened again at a seemingly random spot in that same scene.

Sessa1710-10-03 03:05 PM

Saw it again last night (saw a screening of it about 2 weeks ago) & it truly is an amazing piece of cinema. But for the second time there was nothing after the credits as was reported at Aintitcoolnews. So I don't know what that was all about, if anyone has any info on that, it would be greatly appreciated.

After a second viewing I got to nitpick it more. I only have a few big complaints that could have made the movie better.

1. . . Vivica Fox's character really didn't need to be in the movie, nor did Vivica Fox. She is the only character that is not "cool" in a movie that oozes with coolness. I just wish Quentin would have chose a different person to play the role or written the role differently. I felt like the only reason she was in the movie was to have a black character in the movie. I mean no offense by that for anyone looking to twist my words around.

2. . . Lucy Liu played the character that stole the movie IMO.I really wish her fight at the end went on a lot longer. A lot of looking & pacing in the fight but not much action which was really dissapointing to me.

3. . . Personally the now hyped fight with GoGo IMO really isn't that great. some people, even in this thread are saying it's the greatest fight they have ever seen. Personally, I think the guillotine in Master of the Flyinig Guillotine was WAY more menacing & cooler the first time I saw that. Maybe for someone who hasn't seen movies/fights like these before it's cooler now. She is a GREAT looking character, but I guess I was just expecting more with that fight.

4. I very much didn't like the epic battle going into black & white nor did I like the Anime sequence. The anime part really takes you out of the movie IMO. I'm sure all the anime fanboys drooled over it, but I don't want cartoons in my movies especially 10 minutes worth. Also the black & white really looked like what it was, an excuse for Tarantino to get passed the MPAA on the rating. All theoverexaggerated red blood he used in the movie was not done so just so in could end up being seen in B & W. I know he said he "thought it looked cooler" but that is a bunch of BS he said to the press. He has gone on & on in interviews saying how important it was that BRIGHT RED blood be used heavily in the movie.

But that aside, the movie is simply everthing that is wonderful about film making. It was the most fun I've had at the theater all year & the BEST movie of the year IMO. And I know it will never happen but Uma should be up for an Oscar for this role. There really was some great pieces of acting, take into account the physical training she had to do right after having a kid PLUS learning all of the choreography which is all stuff the average actor doesn't have to learn. Her performance is simply astounding.

cultshock10-10-03 03:24 PM

Just saw it today and LOVED it. I had high hopes for this film and I wasn't disappointed. Very cool, filled with movie references and very violent (in a cartoonish way). And yes, Uma was absolutely great. I can't picture anyone else doing as good a job in the role. But enough gushing (but its my favourite film this year so far :) )

A couple small negatives:

I agree, I didn't care too much for the use of b&w in the one fight sequence. QT said that he thought it looked better that way, but as has been said, it really seemed like a way to get by the MPAA. I hope that rumours are true and the Japan print shows it in colour (and that the DVD is this way).

I liked the idea of an anime sequence, but to be honest, the anime wasn't that impressive looking. I've seen better, but it was still kinda cool.

One very cool surprise at the beginning (I'll use spoilers so it doesn't ruin the surprise):

Spoiler:

I liked the fight between Uma and Go-Go (and she's a great psycho character). Hell I liked all the fights.

I watched the very first showing today before I had to go to work, and there was only about 15 people in the theatre (not many people go to the movies at 1 in the afternoon I guess). Everyone seemed to like it.

One question: the movie ran a bit late, and I was going to be late for work, so I could only stay through half the end credits. Is there anything extra after the credits (a preview to Vol 2 perhaps?)

Saw it this morning. Awesome film. I didnt like the b&w too much and the Gogo fight wasnt "THE BEST EVER!" but the movie was really good. The opening scene was really intense. The last part where Bill is talking to that girl was also very intense.Cant wait until Part Two.

cultshock10-10-03 04:39 PM

Thanks BobSolo!

Also, I forgot to mention that I thought that the split was satisfying.

Spoiler:

It wasn't an abrupt ending at all, it wasn't as bad as I feared it might be.

Of course, this movie has some plot holes and lapses of logic (thats to be expected with a film like this and I have no problem with it) but there was one that stuck out to me:

Spoiler:

That was the only one that struck a false chord with me but I can deal with it. :)

Lateralus4210-10-03 04:56 PM

Awesome movie.

The black and white thind did seem strange. It would be like Spielberg using B&W during his opening SPR scene (there is about an equal amount of blood, gore, and loss of limbs). Its no big deal though. The short anime part in the middle of the movie isnt that bad, I hate anime generally, but this was watchable.

Uma is now the Queen of action movies, I doubt this performance will ever be topped by anyone, man or woman.

Tarantino10-10-03 05:08 PM

Loved it. Tarantino scores again and Kill Bill is just more proof that he's the greatest director alive and oh yeah...he's GOD.

f1shf00d10-10-03 05:12 PM

somewhat disappointed....what bothered me most? that the blood in the anime sequence was brown....that the English dialogue seemed formal and unnatural....that I have to wait four months to pay another 6 bucks....but occasionally extremely cool, for a few moments I felt like I was watching something that no other filmmaker could do, just not enough of these moments...

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 08:30 PM.
