The rats, which are about as cute as rats can be, scamper about their cages and eat and drink anything they are given to demonstrate nutrition in Farley's class at Dale R. Rice Elementary School in Mentor. "Both eat the same, but for the first three weeks we have them, one gets milk and the other pop," Farley said. "We then reverse the milk and pop for the next three weeks." The only restriction was that the rats could not get cola because of the caffeine, Farley said.
So they got orange soda. Lenny and Squiggy's diet improved each week with vegetables, fruit and meat added to the original feeding of rolled oats. "They eat better than some people I know," Farley said. Each week the rats are weighed and measured by four pupils from Farley's class, who clean the cages, feed the rats and take them to other classes to explain the experiment and the results. The pupils discussed how milk provides more protein and is more nutritious and what other foods are needed for good nutrition, Farley said. This is the fifth year Farley has done the experiments, which are sponsored by the Dairy and Nutrition Council Mid East of Cleveland. "They provide us with rats, film strips and other teaching materials," Farley said.
"At the end of the experiments, we send them a report on the results and if we think the program should be changed at all." The male rats, 3 months old, were shipped from Wisconsin two months ago and will start the sixth week of experimentation this week. Farley said after the six-week experiment, the pupils can decide on other one week experiments for Lenny and Squiggy. "For example, in the past we have done a meat vs. vegetarian diet," he said. When the experiments end, the rats will be raffled off.
"Kids who want the rats need a note signed by their parents," Farley said. "I usually find someone for them, but I had to take them to a pet store once."
