The Department of Communication began as a program of what is now Marshall College in the 1970's. It became the first Communication department at the University of California system in 1982, and is now among the best-known communication departments nationwide and worldwide. The Department is a unique academic community of scholars and media artists from disciplines across the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts, and famous for its cutting edge work in communication scholarship and practice, emphasizing research of broad intellectual and social significance, and have a strong focus on scholarship that deals with issues of democracy, diversity, justice and social change. The Undergraduate major in Communication is among the most popular at UCSD, the department's Ph.D. program, with about 50 current students, is known for the innovative scholars it produces.

The Academic Personnel/Human Resource Analyst is responsible for managing the scope of two functional areas: Academic Personnel and Human Resources. These areas encompass Academic appointments and Staff appointments for the Department of Communication.

The AP/HR Analyst serves as consultant to the Department Chair and Chief Administrative Officer in analysis of policy and procedures for operation of academic and personnel issues. Analyze, research and develop policy, provide advice, instruction and policy interpretation on issues involving academic recruitments, appointments, compensation, reviews, academic student employment, benefits administration, compensation, leaves of absence, employee relations, payroll and visa programs.

Oversees annual faculty review process and deadlines. Initiates, prepares, and submits all academic recommendation files for: new, visiting, ladder-rank and PLSOE/LSOE appointments.

Serve as liaison to the School of Social Sciences Dean's Office, UCSD Academic Personnel Services and other administrative units for academic personnel administration. Perform academic personnel and HR actions in UCPath. Actively participate and contribute to short-term operation and long-range departmental goals.

  • Must be able to work occasional overtime.
  • Experience with and knowledge of policies and procedures governing academic personnel. Knowledge of and ability to apply / interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.

  • Knowledge of organization, college and departmental policies and procedures and understanding of variances to stated policies.

  • Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to Chair and Unit Manager.Demonstrated organization, problem solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to instruct faculty on various issues pertaining to personnel functions.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.

  • Ability to collect and analyze data, interpret policies and procedures, and apply them to routine, as well as unique and complex situations. Ability to establish or recommend alternative solutions.

  • Skill to develop innovative approaches, techniques, and procedures to provide more efficient and responsive services.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate ideas and recommendations accurately and with diplomacy. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a variety of diverse individuals.

  • Ability to write accurate and detailed correspondence, reports, and procedures.

  • Skill in developing and maintaining accurate record management systems.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills.

PREFERRED:

  • Knowledge of UCPath and other related business software programs and systems.
  • Background Check required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 - $51.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
